Signs of spring, risk of infection, the three commons

Like everyone else, I look for signs of spring when the snow melts: dog shit and used condoms on urban lawns, ‘everything must clear’ signs on chocolate Santa stocks, unsolicited flashes of sickly flesh, manly smells emanating from open garage doors, people saying ‘The spring has sprung,’ etc.

It’s not until face covering, meaning mouth and nose, has been made mandatory that I have realised what my vulnerabilities are – I live in fear of catching a nasty cocktail of the imbecility, pig-headedness and bloody-mindedness viruses by just exchanging looks in the street.

What do common sense, common courtesy and respect for the common good have in common? A belief by some one must be a Marxist sympathizer to embrace all three of them at the same time.

Happiness

Happiness is when your life is your hobby. Happiness is when the ratio of your expectations to reality is around 1. Happiness is intellectual curiosity and self-sufficiency. But wait till you discover WD40!

I trace the decline in my happiness to when I first realised that normal and moral were not synonyms. But, of course, the real damage was done when someone first let drop moral within my hearing and contaminated my vocabulary, which until then had known only normal. Even now I’d tear the bastard limb from limb with a clear conscience if I could trace him.

No amount of happiness can hold a candle to the joy of a daily bowel movement.

Atheist and accident, politics and religion

An atheist is a man who believes himself an accident. – Francis Thompson

Retort 1

Whereas it is not a contradiction to say that a man of faith knows himself to be a product of intelligent design.

Retort 2

It’s ungenerous for a man of faith to put so little store by the verb ‘believe’ with reference to another man.

Retort 3

But you wouldn’t know this from casual observation because atheists plan their families whereas Christians are happy to let accident decide.

Patriotism is in political life what faith is in religion.  John Dalberg (Lord Acton)

Retort

Or rather, rancour is to politics what fear is to religion, and what a dung ball is to the dung beetle – both nutrient-rich food and a nest to lay its eggs in.

Work ethic

Protestant work ethic – God helps them that help themselves to the fruits of other men's labour.

Jewish work ethic – Work smart think hard.

Socialist work ethic – From each according to his antipathy, to each according to his loyalty.

Corporate work ethic – from galley rower to galley drummer in one hundred million self-improving strokes

Self-employed work ethic – No sell no supper, no supper no soul

Catholic work ethic – Our Father … Give us this day our daily bread.

A Concise Introduction to Logic, Patrick J. Hurley, Wadsworth, 2006, 9th ed,. 8.7, III, 2 p. 448
